Garrett Wilson (* 16th March 1991 in Barrie , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who since July 2019 with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League is under contract on their farm team , the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League on the position of the left winger .

Career

Wilson spent the beginning of his junior career until the summer of 2008 in the lower class junior leagues in his home province of Ontario . At the end of the 2007/08 season , the winger gained his first experience in the higher-class Ontario Hockey League , where he made his debut for the Windsor Spitfires . After a transfer during the summer break, he was at the beginning of the 2008/09 game year in the squad of league competitor Owen Sound Attack , to which he belonged for the following three seasons until summer 2011. During this period, Wilson developed steadily and increased his points yield in the three years from initially 35 points to 62 and finally 86. In his final year he also let another 21 points in 22 playoff games follow, which ensured that the attack won the J. Ross Robertson Cup for the first time in their franchise history . He himself was also appointed to the league's First All-Star Team. With the championship win in the OHL, the Owen Sound Attack were also entitled to participate in the Memorial Cup , but took fourth and last place there.

After the Canadian had already been selected in the fourth round in the fourth round by the Florida Panthers from the National Hockey League in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft , he was signed by them in June 2011 for a three-year entry contract. Wilson was initially employed on the franchise's farm teams . In his first two professional seasons, the attacker increasingly played for the Cincinnati Cyclones in the ECHL , but at times also played for the San Antonio Rampage in the American Hockey League . After he was finally in the San Antonio squad at the beginning of the 2013/14 season , he also made his debut in the NHL in the same game year and was used in three games for the Florida Panthers. After two more NHL appearances in the following year and the renewed extension of his contract by one year, the winger was active for Florida's new cooperation partner, the Portland Pirates , at the beginning of the 2015/16 season . For much of the season he was also in the NHL squad of the Panthers and played 35 games for the team, including the playoffs.

Despite his increased playing time in the NHL, the Panthers did not extend the striker's expiring contract in the summer of 2016, and so Wilson joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as a free agent . They immediately transferred him to the AHL, where he ran up for their farm team Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins . After playing exclusively there for two years, he was named team captain at the beginning of the 2018/19 season . For the previous two years he had already acted as one of the assistant captains of his predecessor Tom Kostopoulos . In the course of the season, after a good start, Wilson was finally called back to an NHL squad for the first time in three years and made his debut for Pittsburgh in November 2018. By the end of the season he had 54 appearances for the NHL team.

In July 2019, after three years with the Penguins, the Canadian joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent .
