Thomas "Tom" Kostopoulos (born January 24, 1979 in Mississauga , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The winger has played over 600 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins , Los Angeles Kings , Montréal Canadiens , Carolina Hurricanes , Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League . However, he spent most of his active career in the American Hockey League , in which he completed over 800 games.

The 1.83 m tall winger began his professional career with the London Knights in the Canadian Junior League OHL before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft as 204th in the seventh round of the Pittsburgh Penguins .

First, the Canadian of Greek descent was used with the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , a farm team in the American Hockey League , in the 2001/02 season he finally made his NHL debut for the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was not until the 2003/04 season that he was a regular member of the Penguins' squad. After the season he was hired as a free agent by the Los Angeles Kings . There the right-shooter could not be used due to the NHL lockout , so he spent the first year with the Kings' cooperation partner, the Manchester Monarchs , in the AHL. From the 2005/06 season Kostopoulos was finally on the ice for the LA Kings in the NHL, for the 2007/08 season he signed a contract with the Montreal Canadiens . On January 22, 2008, Tom Kostopoulos scored a Gordie Howe hat trick in the 8-2 draw against the Boston Bruins , the trick of scoring a goal, an assist and a fight in a game that was punished with at least a five-minute time penalty.

In November 2010 he was transferred to the Calgary Flames together with Anton Babtschuk for Ian White and Brett Sutter . The 2012/13 season began Kostopoulos with the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins, who equipped the winger with a contract in January 2013. On March 6, 2013 he was - on the waiver list - committed by the New Jersey Devils . There the attacker completed his last 15 NHL games before returning to the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the AHL for the following season. He led the team as captain for the next five seasons and was honored with the Fred T. Hunt Memorial Award in 2016 for his dedication and sportiness . After the 2017/18 season, he declared his active career over.

Others

On February 11, 2008, Kostopoulos and his teammate Ryan O'Byrne were arrested outside a nightclub in Tampa , Florida after pickpocketing. O'Byrne was accused of theft, Kostopoulos was arrested for resisting state authority. Both were released on bail a short time later . On February 22nd, the police stopped investigating Kostopoulos after he wrote a letter of apology that he wanted to do community hours.
