Wandering Shepherd
The profession of wandering shepherd is currently experiencing a renaissance in some regions of the Alpine countries . In Central Asia, however , this type of economy has never been lost.
In earlier centuries there were also wandering shepherds in Europe where the pastureland was not very fertile and the livestock of the individual farmers was low. The wandering shepherd specialized in one species of animal (mainly sheep , more rarely goats or cattle) and took care of the cattle (mostly pregnant mothers ) to look after them, especially during the summer months .
Today there are isolated wandering shepherds, e.g. B. in Styria throughout the year, but look for accommodation in colder winter weeks . The question of grazing rights , which were previously regulated by custom, has not been generally clarified.
