Ryan David O'Byrne (* 19th July 1984 in Victoria , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , who during his playing career 2001-2016 among other 333 inserts for the Montreal Canadiens , Colorado Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League has contested on the position of defender .

Ryan O'Byrne began his career as a hockey player in the British Columbia Hockey League , where he was active from 2001 to 2003 for the Victoria Salsa and Nanaimo Clippers. He was then selected in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft in the third round as a total of 79th player by the Canadiens de Montréal . First, however, the defender played for three years for the team from Cornell University , with which he won the ECAC Hockey Championship in the 2004/05 season . For the 2006/07 season , the right-shooter was included in the squad of Montréals farm team , the Hamilton Bulldogs from the American Hockey League , with whom he won the Calder Cup .

In the 2007/08 season O'Byrne made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Canadiens de Montréal, for which he scored a goal in a total of 37 games and gave six assists in his rookie year . In the two following seasons he was also regularly used for the team from Québec in the NHL. In November 2010, O'Byrne was given in an exchange deal to the Colorado Avalanche . At the trade deadline on April 3, 2013, he was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs .

Between August 2013 and July 2014 he was under contract with HC Lev Prague from the KHL and reached the KHL Play Final with the Lions in 2014. He then moved to HC Ambrì-Piotta in the National League A , which compensated for the departure of Maxime Noreau .

From July 2015 he was under contract with HV71 Jönköping from Svenska Hockeyligan and ended his playing career after the 2015/16 season.
