Marcus Lars Johansson (born October 6, 1990 in Landskrona ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Buffalo Sabers of the National Hockey League since July 2019 . Previously, the center spent seven years in the organization of the Washington Capitals , which had selected him in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft in 24th position, and two years with the New Jersey Devils and half a season with the Boston Bruins . With the Swedish national team , he won the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics .

Career

Marcus Johansson began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of the Malmö Redhawks , for whose U18 juniors he was active in the 2006/07 season. He then moved to the youth department of Färjestad BK , for whose professional team he made his debut in the Elitserien , the top Swedish league, in the playoffs of the 2007/08 season . In the following season , the center was able to earn a regular place at Färjestad BK and became Swedish champions with his team . He contributed to this success with five goals and five assists in a total of 51 games. From 2007 to 2009 he was also on loan for Färjestad cooperation partner Skåre BK in the third division Division 1. After winning the championship with Färjestad BK, he was selected in the first round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft as the 24th player in total by the Washington Capitals , but initially stayed with FBK for another year and was able to score ten goals and 15 assists in 47 Increase play. In the KHL Junior Draft 2010 he was selected in the sixth round in position 133 by SKA Saint Petersburg .

In the summer of 2010 Johansson was summoned to North America by his Washington Capitals draft team and was able to prevail in the National Hockey League in the 2010/11 season , in which he was one of the Capitals' regulars. He also played two games for Washington's farm team , the Hershey Bears , in the American Hockey League . By the summer of 2017, the Swede had played over 500 games for the capital city club, before he was given to the New Jersey Devils on July 2, 2017 in exchange for a second and third round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . In the Devils, the Swede failed to build on the performance over the course of the following year and a half. Since the Devils had no interest in a further commitment beyond the end of the contract in summer 2019, they transferred him to the Boston Bruins in February 2019 in exchange for a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2019 and a fourth-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2020 . In addition, the Devils continued to take over 40 percent of the salary until the end of the season.

With the Bruins, he finished the season and then moved to the Buffalo Sabers as a free agent in July 2019 , with whom he signed a two-year contract that should bring him an average annual salary of 4.5 million US dollars.

International

For Sweden , Johansson took part in the junior division of the U18 World Junior Championships in 2007 and 2008 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 2009 and 2010 . At the U18 World Cup in 2007 and at the U20 World Cup in 2010, he and his team won the bronze medal and the silver medal at the U20 World Cup in 2009. He was also Sweden's team captain at the 2010 U20 World Cup.

Johansson made his debut for the senior national team of his home country on the Euro Hockey Tour 2012/13 before winning the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics with the Tre Kronor .
