Michael Frolík [ mɪxaɛl Frolík ] (* 17th February 1988 in Kladno , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player , who in since January 2020 Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League on the position of the center plays. In 2013 he won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks .
Career
Frolík began his career at HC Rabat Kladno , where he went through all the youth teams and from 2002 played in the U18 extra league. In the 2004/05 season he made his debut in the Extraliga , but also continued to play for the juniors of the club. In the following season he was part of the professional squad and played in the front row at the beginning of the season. Because of the performances shown, he was selected in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft as tenth in the first round of the Florida Panthers .
In Kladno, Frolík was nicknamed “Baby Jágr” by his teammates, as both his style of play and his appearance are reminiscent of Jaromír Jágr , who also played for Kladno. In addition, Frolík calls Jaromír Jágr his role model. From the 2006/07 season Frolík played for Océanic de Rimouski in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec and was elected to the "All Rookie Team" of the QMJHL at the end of the season. After the 2007/08 season he took part in the Florida Panthers training camp and made the jump into the NHL Panthers roster. On October 11, 2008, he made his NHL debut for Florida. In February 2011, Frolík was given to the Chicago Blackhawks in an exchange deal . On July 15, 2011, he signed a new three-year contract with the Blackhawks.
Due to the lockout in the NHL, he played in the Czech Tipsport Extraliga with the Piráti Chomutov in autumn 2012 . In late June 2013, he was transferred to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a third-round and five-round suffrage in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft . After spending two years in Winnipeg, Frolík signed a five-year deal with the Calgary Flames in July 2015 . In his final year of contract, however, he was given to the Buffalo Sabers in January 2020 in exchange for a four-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft .
International
Michael Frolík was appointed to the Czech Republic's national team early in his career. At the U18 Junior World Championship in 2004 he won the bronze medal, a year later at the U20 Junior World Championship in 2005 he won a bronze medal again with the U20 selection. At the U18 Junior World Championship in 2006 , he again won the bronze medal. Frolík succeeded in the same with the senior selection at the 2011 and 2012 World Championships , when he contributed five and three points to the respective bronze medal win of the Czech selection.
Frolík made his Olympic debut at the 2014 Winter Games and also represented his home country at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .
