Brandon Montour (born April 11, 1994 in Brantford , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Buffalo Sabers of the National Hockey League since February 2019 and plays for them in the position of defender .

Career

Montour played during his junior years between 2010 and 2013 initially with lower-class teams in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League . There he ran for two years for the Brantford Eagles and then one year for the Caledonia Corvairs . For the 2013/14 season, the defender moved to the United States Hockey League for the Waterloo Black Hawks. There he completed an outstanding playing year with 62 scorer points in 60 games, at the end of which he was voted the best player in the league, among other things. In the final of the Clark Cup, however, the Black Hawks were defeated by the Indiana Ice, Montour himself was the best scorer in the play-offs with 16 points . After the season, the Canadian was selected in the second round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft in 55th place by the Anaheim Ducks from the National Hockey League .

Although Montour had already signed up for the 2014/15 season at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in early September 2013 , he continued the season in the jersey of the Waterloo Black Hawks, as there were disagreements due to his eligibility to play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . After these were cleared and he had booked 21 points in 17 missions for Waterloo, he moved to the university and played alongside his studies for the university's ice hockey team in Hockey East . The 21 missions, in which he scored 20 points, were enough to end the season in the all-rookie team of Hockey East.

After the end of the season, the Canadian finally signed an entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks in March 2015 , which meant he gave up his studies early. During the remainder of the 2014/15 season , the defensive player was used by the Norfolk Admirals in the American Hockey League . These acted as Anaheim's farm team . He collected ten points in 14 missions and thus successfully started his professional career. The season 2015/16 spent Montour completely in the San Diego Gulls , Anaheim's new representative for the AHL. With 57 points in 68 matches, he was elected to the league's All-Rookie Team and First All-Star Team at the end of the season . During the 2016/17 season , the defender made his debut for the Ducks in the NHL in late December 2016, having previously played exclusively for San Diego. At the beginning of the 2017/18 season , he finally established himself in Anaheim's NHL squad and was subsequently one of the top performers on the southern Californians' defense. Still, the Ducks parted ways with him in February 2019 when they gave him up to the Buffalo Sabers in exchange for Brendan Guhle and a first-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft .

International

Montour made his international debut in the jersey of the Canadian national team at the 2019 World Cup in Slovakia , where he won the silver medal with the team.
