Roman Josi (born June 1, 1990 in Bern ) is a Swiss ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League since May 2010 . He has been captain of the team since September 2017 . In 2020 he received the James Norris Memorial Trophy , which is awarded to the best defensive player in the NHL each year .
Career
Roman Josi began his career as a hockey player in the youth team of SC Bern , for whose professional team he made his debut in the National League A in the 2006/07 season . He also made five appearances in the National League B for the Swiss U20 national team in the same season . The following season he played for SC Bern in the NLA, as well as for the U20 juniors and the Young Sprinters Hockey Club in the NLB.
With SC Bern, the defender qualified as the main round winner in the 2007/08 season for participation in the qualifying tournament for the newly founded Champions Hockey League , in which he and his team beat HC Košice and the Nürnberg Ice Tigers . Then Bern was eliminated in the group stage of the CHL, with Josi standing on the ice in all four group games and scoring a goal. In the 2008 NHL Entry Draft , he was drawn by the Nashville Predators in the second round as the 38th player, but initially stayed with his home club in the Swiss capital.
In his last year in Bern he was able to win the Swiss championship with the SCB and was himself elected to the All-Star Team of the National League A. Then he was selected in the KHL Junior Draft 2010 by Lokomotive Yaroslavl in the 4th round in a total of 95th position. On 28 May 2010 Josi signed nevertheless a three-year contract with the NHL - Franchise Nashville Predators, which it had already drafted two years earlier. In September 2010 he took part in the Predators training camp. The defender was then sent to the farm team with the Milwaukee Admirals in the American Hockey League . For his debut in the NHL Roman Josi came on November 26, 2011 in the game against the Detroit Red Wings , where he came to over twelve minutes of ice time. Josi scored his first goal on December 10, 2011 in a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks .
For the duration of the NHL lockout in the 2012/13 season , the defender was hired by his youth club SC Bern in September 2012.
From the 2013/14 season, he mostly formed a defensive pair with captain Shea Weber . Thus, Roman Josi, along with Shea Weber, was the player with the most ice ages in the Predators. In 2015 he was awarded the Swiss Hockey Award . On March 28, 2016 he succeeded in the game against the Colorado Avalanche to 3: 4, which he scored his 57th point of the season six game days before the end of the season . He surpassed Weber's franchise record for most points by a defender in a season (56 points), which he had set up in the 2013/14 season . He scored a total of 61 points (14 goals and 47 assists) this season.
The following year he reached the Stanley Cup final with the Predators, but lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins . In September 2017, the defender was named the new team captain, succeeding Mike Fisher . In addition, he became (after Mark Streit ) the second Swiss to lead an NHL team as captain.
In October 2019, Josi signed a new eight-year contract in Nashville that will take effect at the start of the 2020/21 season. This would make him with an average annual salary of about nine million US dollars after Erik Karlsson and Drew Doughty the defender with the third highest salary in the entire NHL. In the following season 2019/20 the Swiss increased his personal statistics significantly, with 65 points from 69 games, an average of almost 1.0 points per game. As a result, he was nominated together with Victor Hedman and John Carlson as one of the three finalists for the James Norris Memorial Trophy , which honors the best defensive player in the league.
International
For Switzerland, Josi took part in the U18 Junior World Championships 2007 and 2008 as well as the U20 Junior World Championships 2007 , 2008 and 2010 in the top division. In addition, he was in Switzerland's squad at the U20 Junior World Championship 2009 in Division I, where he and his team achieved immediate promotion to the top division, to which he himself made a significant contribution as the best defender of the tournament.
He was also part of the Swiss national team at the 2009 , 2010 , 2012 , 2013 , 2014 and 2015 World Championships , where he played a total of 41 games, scoring eight goals and providing 16 assists. At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki , he won the silver medal with the Confederates, a success that had previously only been achieved at the 1935 World Cup . In addition, he received several personal awards that year - he was appointed to the All-Star team, recognized as most valuable player and best defender - and ended the tournament as the most points defender of all participants.
He also represented his colors at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and Team Europe at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , where he and the team took second place.
Others
On May 1st, 2020 it was announced that Josi and his former national team colleague Mark Streit will become minority shareholders at SC Bern. While Streit was also appointed to the board of directors, Josi is represented by his father.
