Career
Mikko Koivu is the younger brother of the famous ice hockey player Saku Koivu . During the NHL Entry Draft 2001 it was the Minnesota Wild officials who selected him in the first round in sixth position. When he played his final season for TPS Turku in the 2003/04 season , he made 6 goals in 45 games and prepared 24. In the summer of 2004 he finally moved to North America in the American Hockey League to the Houston Eros , which act as the farm team of the Minnesota Wild. There he played 67 games and scored 20 goals and made 28 assists . For the 2005/06 season he was then included in the squad of the Minnesota Wild and completed a good rookie season. He and his brother Saku were appointed to the Finnish national team for the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin .
In the following years, the attacking player was able to continuously increase his points and thus became one of the top performers in the Wild team. His best season so far was the 2008/09 season , when he was able to score 67 points in 79 league games. On October 16, 2008 he also managed to set a new club record with four assists in one game. At the beginning of the 2009/10 season , the Finn was appointed the new team captain of the Wild and signed a contract extension for seven years in the summer of 2010 with a reported total salary of 47 million US dollars. In March 2014, Koivu scored his 438th scorer point in the Wild's jersey in a 6-0 win, making him the player with the highest points in franchise history . He also played the 744th game for Minnesota against the Florida Panthers in February 2016, overtaking Nick Schultz as the club's record player. This was followed by his 1,000th regular season game in the NHL in December 2019.
