Richard Park ( Korean 박용수 , Bak Yong-su ; born May 27, 1976 in Seoul ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach with South Korean citizenship. During his playing career between 1992 and 2014, he played 778 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins , Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , Philadelphia Flyers , Minnesota Wild , Vancouver Canucks and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League as the right winger . Park was only the second Korean-born NHL player after Jim Paek , who had also been drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1985 .
Career
Park immigrated to the United States with his parents at the age of three, and ten years later the family moved to Ontario , Canada , where Park, now a US national, began playing ice hockey. At the age of 16, the 1.80 m tall striker joined the Belleville Bulls from the Canadian Junior League OHL , in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft he was finally selected ( drafted ) as 50th in the second round by the Pittsburgh Penguins .
For the pens he completed his first NHL appearances in the 1994/95 season , and during his time in Pittsburgh Park was also on the ice for the Penguins farm team , the Cleveland Lumberjacks , in the International Hockey League . In his other stations, the right-handed shooter did not get beyond the role of a supplementary player, for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and the Philadelphia Flyers he played a total of only 44 games in five years. It was only with his move to the Minnesota Wild in the 2001/02 season Park became a regular NHL player, in 2002/03 he completed over 80 season games for the first time and achieved a new personal record with 24 points in the regular season.
During the lockout in the 2004-05 season Park played for both the Malmo Redhawks in the Swedish Elitserien and for the SCL Tigers in the Swiss National League A . Back in the National Hockey League, the American moved as a free agent to the Vancouver Canucks , through which he came to the NY Islanders for the 2006/07 season .
In September 2010 he signed a contract with HC Servette Genève in the Swiss National League A . In his first season for Servette, he scored 17 goals and 20 assists in a total of 50 games. On September 2nd, 2011 it was announced that HC Servette Genève and Park had agreed to terminate the contract. A few days later, Park signed a one-year two-way deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
In 2012 he signed a two-year contract with the Swiss HC Ambrì-Piotta and was one of the top performers there in the following two game years. In 2014 he ended his career and switched to the coaching staff of the Minnesota Wild.
International
With the US national ice hockey team , Park won the bronze medal at the 2004 World Cup . He also took part in the 2002 , 2005 and 2006 World Championships for the USA , with the latter as team captain. In addition, the winger won the 2004 Germany Cup with Team USA .
