Career

The 1.91 m tall defender began his career with the Sudbury Wolves in the Canadian Junior League OHL before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft as 123rd in the sixth round of the Buffalo Sabers .

However, the left-shooter was never used by the Sabers in the NHL, was only with the Buffalo farm team Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League on the ice and was finally transferred to the Los Angeles Kings on June 26, 1994 in exchange for Doug Houda . After just one season, O'Donnell made the jump from the Phoenix Roadrunners from the International Hockey League to the Kings NHL squad, for which he completed 381 games by the end of the 1999/00 season .

In the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft , he was ultimately selected as one of the most skilled players by the newly formed Minnesota Wild , where the Canadian became the first captain in franchise history . However, O'Donnell did not play a full season for Minnesota, the rest of the season he spent with the New Jersey Devils .

At the beginning of the 2001/02 season , the defensive player was finally hired as a free agent by the Boston Bruins , for whom he played three years. Through the Phoenix Coyotes , Sean O'Donnell finally came to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 2006 , for which he was also on the ice under the new team name Anaheim Ducks and with whom he also won the Stanley Cup . O'Donnell stayed with the team until October 2008, before moving back to the Los Angeles Kings for a draft pick, where he started his NHL career in 1994. On July 1, 2010, he signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers .

On July 1, 2011, he received a contract as a free agent with the Chicago Blackhawks . In January 2013, the defender announced his official retirement.
