Career
Keith Carney began his career as a hockey player in the team of the University of Maine , for which he was active from 1988 to 1991 and with which he won the championship of Hockey East in the 1988/89 season. As a high school student, he had previously been selected by the Buffalo Sabers in the fourth round of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft as the 76th player . For the Sabers, the defender made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1991/92 season . In his rookie year , he scored one goal in 21 games and gave five assists. At the same time, as in the following year, he played for Buffalo's farm team , the Rochester Americans from the American Hockey League .
On October 26, 1993 Carney was given together with a six- round suffrage for the 1995 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Craig Muni and a five-round suffrage, also for the 1995 Entry Draft, to the Chicago Blackhawks . After spending a large part of his first season in Chicago with its farm team from the International Hockey League , the Indianapolis Ice , he subsequently earned a regular place in the NHL squad. Shortly before the end of the trade deadline in 1998, the left-shooter was transferred to the Phoenix Coyotes along with Jim Cummins for Chad Kilger and Jayson More . He spent a total of three years with the Arizona team before he was signed by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 2001 .
Carney was under contract with the Ducks for a total of five years. During the lockout in the 2004/05 season , however, he did not play a single game. The former international ended the 2005/06 season with the Vancouver Canucks , but left the Canadians after only 18 games. This was followed by two seasons at the Minnesota Wild , before the American joined SC Bern from the Swiss National League A for the 2008/09 season. There he came up with four assists in twelve appearances. At the end of the season, he ended his career at the age of 39. He then worked for two years between 2011 and 2013 in the coaching staff of his ex-team Chicago Blackhawks.
International
For the United States , Carney took part in the 1990 World Junior Championships and the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano .
