Marcus Foligno (born August 10, 1991 in Buffalo , New York ) is an American - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League since June 2017 . Previously, the left winger was active in the Buffalo Sabers organization for six years .

Career

Marcus Foligno was born in Buffalo, New York , United States . Since both of his parents were Canadian citizens, Foligno was granted dual citizenship of the United States and Canada. Foligno played as a junior for the Sudbury Wolves Bantam AAA and the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves in regional divisions of the Northern Ontario Hockey Association.

Sudbury Wolves (2007-2011)

Marcus Foligno's professional playing career began in the 2007/08 season after he was selected by the Sudbury Wolves in the second round in 39th place in the 2007 OHL Priority Selection . At the end of his first season for the Wolves in the Ontario Hockey League , Foligno was able to show five goals and six assists for eleven scorer points in 66 games . Foligno has spent 38 minutes in the penalty box this season .

In his second OHL season, the Canadian winger increased his yield to 30 points, including twelve goals. A tougher style of play also increased the penalty minutes that Foligno had to serve, from 38 to 96 minutes. Foligno took part in the 2009 CHL Top Prospects Game at the General Motors Center in Oshawa . At the end of the 2009/10 season , Foligno again had significantly more penalty minutes. The Canadian could only partially meet the offensive expectations this season; he scored two hits and seven assists more than in the previous season and accordingly closed the season with a total of 39 points.

In Foligno's last season in the OHL, the 2010/11 season , the Sudbury Wolves attacker was able to achieve his personal bests in the offensive categories: he scored 22 goals and provided 36 assists; thus he was the third best point collector of the Wolves this season. His 92 penalty minutes were also the team's third most. Due to a knee injury, he was only able to participate in 47 games of his team this season.

Buffalo Sabers (2011-2017)

Foligno signed on May 25, 2011 an entry contract with the Buffalo Sabers from the National Hockey League . First he played in the 2011/12 season for the Sabers farm team, the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League and during this time he played 55 games in which he contributed 14 goals and 20 assists for his team.

On December 19, 2011, the left winger was called up by the Buffalo Sabers and made his NHL debut a day later. In his second NHL game, which he played on March 10, 2012, Marcus Foligno scored the first goal of his NHL career in the last third of the game. The opponents of the Sabers were the Ottawa Senators , his brother Nick Foligno's team .

Minnesota Wild (since 2017)

After six years in Buffalo, Foligno was handed over to the Minnesota Wild in June 2017 with Tyler Ennis and a third-round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . In return, Jason Pominville , Marco Scandella and a four-round vote for the same draft moved to Buffalo. For the time being, the Wild only secured the negotiating rights to Foligno, whose contract expires on July 1, 2017, so that from this point on he could enter into negotiations with all teams in the league ( unrestricted free agent ) . Eventually he signed a new four-year contract in Minnesota.
