The golden gecko or Vietnam golden gecko ( Gekko badenii , syn .: Gekko ulikovskii ) is a nocturnal gecko , medium-sized and up to 25 cm in length. He is a species of the genus Gekko .

The species was in 1994 shortly after the other two research groups described the first time on 15 April 1994 by Shcherbak & Nekrasova as badenii G. and on May 15 of Darevsky & Orlov as G. ulikovskii . As usual in biological nomenclature , the first name and thus G. badenii takes precedence.

features

The golden gecko is a medium-sized to large nocturnal gecko with a body length of up to 25 cm. The 21 by Nguyen et al. examined animals have a head-trunk length of up to 10.8 cm and a tail length of up to 11.2 cm. The ratio of head-trunk length to tail length fluctuates between 0.81 and 1.28; the tail can thus be a little longer or a little shorter than the head-trunk length. This makes it smaller than the Tokeh ( Gekko gecko ), who also lives in Vietnam and is characterized by a head-torso length greater than 11 cm. The golden gecko has flat, small scales. The animals examined had 114-136 scales around the midsection. Between the nasal scales ( scutum nasale ) there are 0–3 scales ( scutum internasale ). Males have 10–18 pores in front of the cloaca . On the upper side it is colored light yellow to light orange with 4–8 light, almost whitish-looking horizontal stripes from the neck to the tail. The extremities are light pink to whitish in color. The ventral side is also whitish. The females stay a little smaller than the males and usually have a rather brownish color.

distribution

Distribution area

The golden gecko lives in Vietnam . Shcherbak and Nekrasova described animals from Tây Ninh Province , Darevsky and Orlov found the geckos in Kon Tum Province . Exact data on the distribution are not known. It is known that the species occurs on sandstone formations in transition areas to the jungle.

Reproduction

The mating of the golden geckos takes place seasonally from March to September. Like all geckos of the genus Gekko, the golden gecko lays two hard-shelled eggs. These are glued to the substrate. The young hatch at a temperature of 25–30 ° C after 60–90 days. The golden geckos do not care for their broods. The young are actively hunted by the adult animals.

food

In addition to insects, arachnids and smaller vertebrates, the golden gecko also eats fruit such as bananas from time to time .
