Robert Curtis McElhinney (born May 23, 1983 in London , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League since July 2019 .

Career

Curtis McElhinney began his career in the team of Colorado College in 2001. There he played until 2005 for a total of four years in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a league in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . The Canadian was selected by the Calgary Flames as the 176th player during the 2002 NHL Entry Draft .

In the summer of 2005, McElhinney was appointed to the squad of the Calgary farm team , the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights of the American Hockey League , after he had signed his first professional contract in advance. For the Knights he played for a total of two years until the team disbanded. In the summer of 2007 McElhinney received a contract with the new farm team of the Flames, the Quad City Flames , for which he played 41 games in the AHL. On October 22, 2007, the Canadian made his debut in the National Hockey League as a replacement for Miikka Kiprusoff for the Flames in a game against the San Jose Sharks . In the 2007/08 season McElhinney completed a total of five games before Curtis Joseph was signed as a replacement. After his departure in the summer of 2008, McElhinney was again number 2 in the Calgary goalkeeper hierarchy. In March 2010 he was given in an exchange deal with the Anaheim Ducks , in return Vesa Toskala went to the Calgary Flames.

After McElhinney was temporarily promoted to the goalkeeper in Anaheim after the injury-related loss of Jonas Hiller , he was noticeable after good performances due to inconsistent appearances and had contributed to three defeats in a row for the Californians. On February 24, 2011, the management of the Ducks decided to give the goalkeeper in an exchange deal to the Tampa Bay Lightning and received Dan Ellis in return . Shortly before the trade deadline , he was put on the Bolts' waiver list from which the Ottawa Senators selected him.

On July 4, 2011, McElhinney signed a two-way contract for one year with the Phoenix Coyotes , which gave him a second-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and a five-round vote in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in an exchange in exchange for Antoine Vermette to Columbus Blue Jackets .

After nearly five years in the organization of the Blue Jackets, McElhinney was signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs in January 2017 when he was about to be sent to the AHL via the waiver.

After the 2017/18 season, he made his debut in the 2018 World Cup for the Canadian national team , where he finished fourth with the team. As part of the preparation for the 2018/19 season, he lost his place in the Maple Leafs squad to Garret Sparks and was subsequently signed again by the Carolina Hurricanes waiver . In early July 2019, he signed a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent .
