Daniel "Dan" Ellis (born June 19, 1980 in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League since July 2015 and for their farm team, the Hershey Bears , in the AHL is used.

Career

Dan Ellis began his career with the Newmarket Hurricanes in a junior league in Ontario before moving to the United States Hockey League for the Omaha Lacers in 1999 . He then played for the University of Nebraska in Omaha for three years . There he showed consistently good performances and was able to look forward to several awards and records. In 2002, he recorded a series of seven games won with a goal average of 1.00, 96.6% saved shots and three shutouts .

Ellis began his professional career in the 2003/04 season with the Utah Grizzlies , the then farm team of the Dallas Stars . In the same season (February 18, 2004) he also made his NHL debut when he represented Marty Turco in a game against the Los Angeles Kings , showing 25 saves and his first NHL victory (4-3 for the Stars) was allowed to record. However, this was so far his only use in the NHL, as he could not prevail against Mike Smith .

Ellis shared the position as the goalkeeper of the Iowa Stars with Mike Smith in the 2005/06 season and came to 34 games, which he completed with a goal average of 2.77 and a catch rate of 91.1%. During the season Mike Smith prevailed as number 1 against Ellis, so that Ellis was not used in any game of the play-offs . In the 2006/07 season he had to share the goalkeeper position at the Iowa Stars with Tobias Stephan , as Smith now acted as a backup for Marty Turco in the NHL.

On July 5, 2007, he signed a one-year contract with the Nashville Predators . Due to the staggering performance of goalkeeper Chris Mason , Ellis came more and more to appearances for the Predators, where he showed very solid performances. That's why Ellis became the Predators' new goalkeeper after a short time. Ellis was instrumental in ensuring that the Predators reached the playoffs as the eighth team in the 2007/08 season . That season he also set a new season franchise record with six shutouts .

With the start of the free agent phase in the NHL on July 1, 2010, Ellis decided to move to Tampa Bay, where he met his old rival Mike Smith. Although he was often used there, Ellis was recently ousted by the experienced Dwayne Roloson . On February 24, 2011, the Bolts decided to give him to the Anaheim Ducks in an exchange for Curtis McElhinney .

In September 2012, the Canadian was signed by the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League . He ended the 2012/13 season with the Carolina Hurricanes . In July 2013, Ellis signed a two-year deal with the Dallas Stars.

On March 5, 2014, he was transferred to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Tim Thomas and completed six games for the Panthers by the end of the season. While preparing for the new season, Ellis was then given to the AHL farm team, the San Antonio Rampage .

After his contract was not renewed there, Ellis signed a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals in July 2015 and is expected to play there for the Hershey Bears .
