ECHL All-Star Game
The ECHL All-Star Game (also ECHL All-Star Classic ) is an ice hockey friendship game of the best and most popular players in the North American professional league ECHL , which was first played in 1993. In the usual format, two teams from the two ECHL Conferences usually compete against each other, but this format has been changed several times since then.
The starting formations are chosen by players, coaches and officials prior to the All-Star Game by voting. The coaches are usually the head coaches of the two teams who, at the time of the announcement of the two all-star teams, lead the respective conference with their teams. As with the NHL All-Star Game and the AHL All-Star Classic , the ECHL All-Star Game also has a skill competition before the actual game, in which the players compare their individual skills - such as speed, shooting power and shooting precision.
history
The first ECHL All-Star Game was held in 1993 when an East Division team met a West Division team in Wheeling , West Virginia , and the East won the game 7-3. Darren Schwartz , who scored four points, was named the All-Star Game's first MVP . A year later, the East Division vs. West Division continued in Norfolk Scope and the West narrowly won the game 7-6. With Joe Cook and Cory Cadden for the first time two players were awarded as MVP. John Brophy of the Hampton Roads Admirals was the head coach of the first two All-Star Games and Doug Sauter was even with all of them in the first three games. The format of the game was first changed in 1996 when the North Division team met that of the South Division at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center . A year later, a novelty in the history of the league was set up when two teams from the divisions did not meet as usual. The host Charlotte Checkers put together a team from a selection of players, most of whom did not belong to their squad, but were made up of all teams in the league, which played against the ECHL All-Stars and won the game 7: 6.
Another year later, a Canada All-Stars selection met the USA / World team . The game was played at the Cajundome , home of the Louisiana IceGators , in Lafayette , Louisiana , in front of a record crowd of 11,493. From 1998 the Northern Conference vs. Southern Conference introduced, which, with a few exceptions, continued to exist in the following years. The All-Star Game 2010 set a new record with 19 goals, and the game was decided by a shootout for the first time .
For the All-Star Game scheduled for January 26, 2011, the format and idea from 1997 were used. With the Bakersfield Condors , a team from the league appeared for the second time in the history of the game, and like the Charlotte Checkers they met the ECHL All-Stars 14 years earlier . This time the All-Stars clearly won the game and won 9: 3. In front of 7,392 spectators at the Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield , Mark Arcobello scored three goals and was voted MVP. After no All-Star Game had been played for the first time in ECHL history during the 2011/12 season , the Colorado Eagles were awarded the contract to host the event on January 23, 2013 during the league 's 25th anniversary season .
As part of the All-Star Game, the new members have been accepted into the ECHL Hall of Fame since 2008 .
