Carter Verhaeghe (born August 14, 1995 in Waterdown , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League since July 2017 and plays there on the position of the center .
Career
Verhaeghe was initially active in lower-class Canadian junior ice hockey before he was selected in the second round of the OHL Priority Selection in 2011 by the Niagara IceDogs . In the following season 2011/12 , the center became a regular at the IceDogs. With the team he reached the playoff finals of the OHL, but was subject to the London Knights . In the following two seasons, the striker managed to increase his points yield significantly. So he ended the 2013/14 game year , Verhaeghe had meanwhile been appointed assistant captain, with 82 points in 65 games of the regular season as the player with the highest points on his team. During this time he was selected in the third round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft at a total of 82nd position by the Toronto Maple Leafs . In April 2014, he signed a three-year entry - level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Then the Canadian was sent to the farm team for the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League , for which the attacker was in two AHL games. Verhaeghe spent the 2014-15 season in the junior division and was named team captain of the Niagara IceDogs for his final season in the Ontario Hockey League .
The striker then moved to the adult division and was transferred to the New York Islanders in September 2015 as part of a swap deal . The following two seasons he spent with the farm teams Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL) and Missouri Mavericks ( ECHL ). In early July 2017, he was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Kristers Gudļevskis . Verhaeghe was the next two seasons exclusively in the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League in use. There he developed into a reliable scorer, especially in the 2018/19 season he convinced together with his teammate Alex Barré-Boulet . Both scored 34 regular season goals and received the Willie Marshall Award . Verhaeghe also won the John B. Sollenberger Trophy as the best point player in the league and was awarded a call to the AHL First All-Star Team .
In the 2019/20 season he finally made his debut for the Lightning in the National Hockey League .
International
Verhaeghe took part in the 2013 U18 World Junior Championship with the Canadian selection . In seven missions he recorded four assists and finally won the gold medal with Canada.
