Braydon Coburn (born February 27, 1985 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League since March 2015 . Previously, the defender spent almost eight years with the Philadelphia Flyers and about two years in the organization of the Atlanta Thrashers , which had selected him in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft in eighth position.
Career
During the 2003 NHL Entry Draft , Braydon Coburn was selected as the eighth overall player by the Atlanta Thrashers . As a junior player, the defender was active for a total of five years for the Portland Winter Hawks from the Western Hockey League from 2000 to 2005 . Towards the end of the 2004/05 season he was called up by the Thrashers' farm team , the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League , to play in the playoffs. This marked his debut in professional ice hockey for Coburn. Towards the end of the 2005/06 season , Coburn was first used in the National Hockey League for Atlanta.
On February 24, 2007, Coburn was given to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Alexei Schitnik . A deflected puck injured him over the eye on May 11, 2008, so that he could not play for the rest of the season.
After eight years and over 500 NHL appearances in Philadelphia, the Flyers gave him to the Tampa Bay Lightning in March 2015 . In return, the Lightning Radko Gudas and a first- and a third-round right to vote in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft transferred to Philadelphia.
International
For Canada, Coburn took part at junior level in the 2003 U18 World Cup and the 2004 and 2005 U20 World Cup , winning gold medals in both age groups. For the senior selection he was on the ice for the first time at the 2009 World Championships , where Coburn won the silver medal with Team Canada .
