Josef Peukert

Josef Peukert (born January 22, 1855 in Albrechtsdorf , † March 3, 1910 in Chicago ) was an Austrian anarchist . He was best known for his main autobiographical work, Memoirs of a Proletarian from the Revolutionary Labor Movement , even if Max Nettlau viewed these memories as extremely skeptical .

Life

Josef Peukert grew up in poor conditions in northern Bohemia . From the age of six he worked in his father's company and at the age of eleven he was taken out of school. As a 16-year-old he ran away from home and got by in Germany with odd jobs. Peukert took part in social democratic workers' associations and later became a communist anarchist . In exile in London , Peukert became an employee of Johann Most , which also made him further radicalized and, after his return in the 1880s, became a leader of the radical faction, as which he called for the propaganda of deed and terror against society and the state. In 1881 Peukert was editor of the magazine Die Zukunft , editor of Der Rebell , from 1886 to 1893 editor of Die Autonomie and after 1889 co-editor of Der Anarchist . In the so-called fratricidal war , because of his friendship with the police agent Theodor Reuss , Victor Dave held him responsible for the arrest and later sentencing of Johann Neve (who died in custody in 1896) to 15 years in prison. From 1890 he worked with Emma Goldman for a few years in New York City .
