Johann Christoph Neve (born April 12, 1844 , † December 8, 1896 in Berlin ) was a German anarchist .

Life

Johann Neve played an important role in the history of the development of organized anarchism in German-speaking countries at the time of the Socialist Law . Since the beginning of the 1870s he was actively involved in the labor movement .

He organized the illegal distribution of the magazine Freiheit in Germany and Austria and also took care of the distribution of the magazines Der Rebell and Die Autonomie . In 1887 he was arrested by the Belgian police in Liège and "as a vagabond" extradited to Germany, where he was identified by an informant and charged with " offenses against the dynamite law, ..., inciting a popular uprising, blasphemy, lese majesty, spreading the" Freedom ”, the“ rebel ”and the“ autonomy ” ” (quote from E. Horn / St.Kaufmann / U.Bröckling (ed.), Border violators ). In 1887 Neve was arrested in Liège and sentenced to 15 years in prison in Leipzig in October.

On December 8, 1896, he died in an unresponsive state in the Moabit penitentiary of the consequences of tuberculosis .

The circumstances of his arrest, in particular the role of the informer, were never exposed and led to a large number of controversies and speculations, particularly about the role of social democracy .
