The 2012/13 season of the Vysschaya Hockey League is the 21st season of the second highest Russian ice hockey league and the third since the league was founded.
Changes compared to the previous year
- The HC Donbass changes in the Kontinental Hockey League .
- Lokomotiv Yaroslavl , who took part in the Vysschaya Hockey League as a visiting team after the plane crash near Yaroslavl last year, is playing with the first team in the KHL again . The club's second team continues to take part in the Vysschaya Hockey League.
- The saryarka karagandy from Kazakhstan was admitted as an expansion team in the league.
- The Yunost Minsk of Belarus was included as an expansion team in the league.
- The HC Kuban was included as an expansion team in the league.
- The HK Buran Voronezh was added to the league as an expansion team.
- The THK Tver was added to the league as an expansion team.
- HK Metschel Tscheljabinsk changed its name to HK Tschelmet Tscheljabinsk .
mode
The West and East conferences were dissolved before the season started and instead all 27 participants were listed in a common table, following the European model. These played in a home and return match against every other participant in the league, whereupon each team played a total of 52 games in the main round. The 16 best-placed teams then qualified for the playoffs, in which the second division champions are played. Each team receives three points for a win after regular time, two points for a win after extra time, one point for a loss after extra time and zero points for a loss after regular time.
