The 2009/10 season of the Vysschaya League was the 18th season of the second-highest Russian ice hockey division . HK Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk won the championship title, the so-called Bratin Cup , for the second time in a row and thus achieved the athletic qualification for promotion to the KHL . Due to the reform of the second division had to withdraw after the season Chimik Voskressensk and HK Lipetsk for financial reasons, while other teams were relegated to the Pervaya League .

The 27 teams of the Vysschaya League were divided into three conferences before the season according to regional criteria. The western conference with ten teams had one more participant than the central conference with nine teams and two more than the eastern conference with eight teams. Initially, each team played six times against each opponent within their own conference, so that the number of games per team in the western conference was 54, in the central conference 48 and in the eastern conference 42.
The eight best teams then qualified for the round of 16 of the playoffs, in which the second division champions were played, while the following 16 teams already started in the playoffs of the sixteenth finals. Each team received three points for a win after regular time, two points for a win after extra time, one point for a loss after extra time and zero points for a loss after regular time.
