Damon Severson (born August 7, 1994 in Brandon , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League since September 2012 . The defender previously spent four years with the Kelowna Rockets in the Western Hockey League .

Career

Damon Severson was born in Brandon, but moved with his family to Melville , Saskatchewan when he was two years old . At the age of six he began to play organized ice hockey and subsequently went through the youth department of the Melville Millionares from his hometown. In the WHL Bantam Draft 2009, the Kelowna Rockets selected him from the Western Hockey League in 192nd position, so that Severson from then on played in one of the top junior leagues in Canada . The subsequent 2009/10 season, however, he spent most of the time with the Yorkton Harvest from the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League and only played five games for the Kelowna Rockets.

With the beginning of the 2010/11 season Severson was firmly in the squad of the Rockets and completed 64 games with 17 points scored in his first season. He also took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 with the Canada Western team. The next year he became available for the NHL Entry Draft , he increased his stats in the WHL to 37 points from 56 games and was invited to the CHL Top Prospects Game , where the most promising talents compete against each other in one game. In April, he also drove with the Canadian U18 national team to the 2012 U18 World Cup in the Czech Republic , where he won the bronze medal. In the final report of Central Scouting Services , he was rated 48th of all North American outfield players before the New Jersey Devils finally selected him in 60th position. In September of the same year he signed a three-year entry contract with the Devils.

To give him game practice, the Devils left him for the time being with the Kelowna Rockets in the WHL and only called him at the end of the 2012/13 season for two games on their farm team , the Albany Devils from the American Hockey League . He even spent the following 2013/14 season in Kelowna, leading the team as assistant captain and posting 61 points in 64 games.

As part of the preparation for the 2014/15 season of the National Hockey League , Severson prevailed at the New Jersey Devils and has been in their NHL squad since then. In his first nine games he scored four goals and made three assists. In September 2017, he signed a new six-year contract in New Jersey for a total salary of $ 25 million.

As part of the 2019 World Cup , Severson made his debut for the Canadian senior team and won the silver medal there.
