Trevor van Riemsdyk (born July 24, 1991 in Middletown , New Jersey ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League since June 2017 . The defender previously spent three years with the Chicago Blackhawks , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2015 playoffs .

Career

Trevor van Riemsdyk was born in Middletown and attended the Christian Brothers Academy , a Catholic private school. There he played for the Colts , the school's ice hockey team, and was the team's top scorer in the 2008/09 season with 11 goals and 47 assists as a defender. In 2009 he moved to the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL) to the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs , where he achieved a points average of over 1.0 per game over the next two years. He also won the EJHL championship with the team in the 2010/11 season, where he was personally named Defensive Player of the Year .

From 2011 van Riemsdyk attended the University of New Hampshire and thus followed his brother James . At the UNH, the American was now on the ice for the Wildcats and already led all defenders of the team in scorer points (19) as a freshman . At the end of his first season in Hockey East , a college league organized by the NCAA , he was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team . Since he was not included in the NHL Entry Draft , he took part in a talent screening of the Philadelphia Flyers in the summer of 2012 , but left no lasting impression there. So the defender continued to play for the Wildcats and scored 33 points in 39 games in the 2012/13 season.

NHL

After another season in Hockey East, in which he led the Wildcats as assistant captain, van Riemsdyk was hired as a free agent by the Chicago Blackhawks in March 2014 . As a result, he completed the pre-season with the Blackhawks and was able to establish himself straight away in the NHL squad, so that he made his debut in the National Hockey League on the 1st day of the 2014/15 season . Van Riemsdyk did not miss any of the first 18 games of the season, but suffered a patellar fracture on November 16, 2014 when he blocked an opponent's slap shot. This was followed by a four-month injury hiatus that ended on March 14, 2015 when he played his first game for the Rockford IceHogs , the Blackhawks' farm team , in the American Hockey League . Seven more games for the IceHogs followed before the American was injured again and had to undergo wrist surgery. The following two-month break ensured that van Riemsdyk only played 26 competitive games in the entire 2014/15 regular season.

Despite the lack of game practice, the Blackhawks called him back to the NHL squad in late May, so he played four games in the Stanley Cup final against the Tampa Bay Lightning and won the Stanley Cup in his first NHL season . After the season, his contract in Chicago was extended for two years. At the 2017 World Cup , the defender made his debut for the US national team, finishing fifth with the team.

On June 21, 2017, he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft , but was given to the Carolina Hurricanes only one day later together with a seven-round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . In return, they gave Vegas a second-round vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft .
