Brady Skjei (born March 26, 1994 in Lakeville , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League since February 2020 and plays for them in the position of defender . Previously, he spent five years in the New York Rangers organization .
Career
Brady Skjei played for Lakeville North High in a regional high school league when he was young . Due to his convincing performance, he was accepted into the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), the central talent factory of the US association, at the beginning of the 2010/11 season . With the NTDP he took part in the game operation of the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior league in the country, and was also part of the youth national teams of his home country. He won the silver medal at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 and the gold medal at the U18 World Championship in 2012 the following year . The New York Rangers then selected him in 28th position in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft .
In 2012 Skjei retired due to old age from the NTDP and enrolled as a result at the University of Minnesota , for whose Gophers he henceforth participated in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). After finishing fifth with the US U20 national team at the 2014 U20 World Cup , he won the Big Ten Conference championship with the Gophers in his third year of college . Immediately after the college season, the Rangers provided him with an entry-level contract in April 2015 .
The defender ended the 2014/15 season with 23 appearances for Hartford Wolf Pack , the farm team of the New York Rangers from the American Hockey League (AHL). The 2015/16 season also began Skjei in Hartford, but was appointed to the NHL squad for the first time in December 2015 and made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) a little later . By the end of the season, the American came on twelve missions for the Rangers and continued to play mainly in Hartford. He subsequently made his debut in May 2016 at the 2016 World Cup for the senior national team of the USA , finishing fourth with the team. With the start of the 2016/17 season, Skjei was firmly in the Rangers' squad, where he had 39 points in 80 games in his first full season, so that he was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team . In July 2018, he signed a new six-year contract in New York that is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 5.25 million.
After five years in the Rangers organization, Skjei was handed over to the Carolina Hurricanes for the trade deadline in February 2020 . In return, New York received a first-round right to vote for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft , with Carolina being able to decide before the draft whether to give up her own right to vote or that of the Toronto Maple Leafs , which they had received from the Patrick Marleau trade .
