Jake Gardiner (born July 4, 1990 in Deephaven , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League since September 2019 and plays for them in the position of defender . Prior to that, he spent over eight years in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization .
Career
Jake Gardiner first played ice hockey from 2005 to 2008 with the Minnetonka Skippers , the high school team of Minnetonka High School , in the high school league system of the United States. During this time he also gained match experience in the ice hockey team of the South West team , for which the defensive player was also active in the high school league system. In the 2007/08 season, Gardiner acted in the role of the team captain of the Minnetonka Skippers , where he managed his best point season at Minnetonka High School . In 24 games, the American, who had mainly acted as an attacking player in the course of his career, scored 20 goals and 28 assists . Because of his convincing achievements, Gardiner was nominated in 2008 for the annual Minnesota Mr. Hockey award, which honors the best high school player in the US state of Minnesota . In the end, it wasn't enough to win the award, which was secured by attacking defender Aaron Ness . During this time, the secured Anaheim Ducks in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft , the rights to the Americans when they picked him in the first round 17th overall position.
For the 2008/09 season, Gardiner decided to work at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and went on ice for its ice hockey team, the Wisconsin Badgers , in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association . In his debut season he was with 21 points in 39 games, including 18 assists, the second best rookie defender of the WCHA and took third place within the team among the defenders of the Wisconsin Badgers after Jamie McBain and Brendan Smith . In the following season, his points yield was reduced, but Gardiner scored two of his six goals this season undernumbered and led the team's internal ranking of the plus / minus balance with a value of +25. For the 2010/11 season he acted as assistant captain of the Badgers and increased his points balance significantly compared to the previous season and scored at least one scorer point in 26 of 41 season appearances . Within the WCHA, the player from the US state of Minnesota was the most successful defender together with the Canadian Chay Genoway , who also recorded 31 assists.
On February 9, 2011, the Anaheim Ducks gave his rights together with offensive player Joffrey Lupul to the Toronto Maple Leafs to sign defender François Beauchemin . The Leafs also received a four-round vote in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft from the Californians. On March 15, 2011, Gardiner finally signed a three-year entry contract in the organization of the Leafs and was then sent to the farm team to the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League . The defender made his professional debut for this shortly afterwards. At the end of the season, Gardiner received a nomination for the WCHA Second All-Star Team. For the 2011/12 season he made it to the Toronto NHL squad. He played his first NHL game on October 6, 2011 against the Montréal Canadiens .
Over the course of the following years, Gardiner established himself in the NHL squad of the Maple Leafs and therefore signed a new five-year contract in July 2014, which should bring him a total salary of 20.25 million US dollars. In the 2017/18 season he significantly increased his personal statistics to 52 scorer points from 82 games. In the summer of 2019, he did not reach an agreement with the Leafs about a contract extension, so he left the franchise after more than eight years as a free agent . In September 2019, the defender finally signed a new four-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes , which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.05 million.
International
Gardiner was on the US national team for the 2010 U20 World Junior Championship . In seven games he posted three assists and secured the tournament victory with the USA after a 6-5 win after extra time in the final against Canada . At senior level, he took part in the 2014 and 2015 World Championships, where he won the bronze medal with the team in the latter.
