Charles "Chay" Genoway (born December 20, 1986 in Morden , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Awtomobilist Yekaterinburg from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) since May 2020 and plays there in the position of defender . His brother Colby Genoway is also a hockey player.

Career

Youth and college

In his youth, Chay Genoway played for the Pembina Valley Hawks and the Winkler Flyers , among others , before moving to the prestigious Shattuck-Saint Mary’s private school in Faribault , Minnesota , for the 2004/05 season . He then spent a year with the Vernon Vipers in the British Columbia Hockey League , but never ran in the Western Hockey League , the highest-ranking junior league in this region. As a result, the defender was not included in the NHL Entry Draft . In 2006 Genoway enrolled at the University of North Dakota and from then on ran for their ice hockey team, the Fighting Sioux , in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) game operations .

The Canadian spent five successful years at the Fighting Sioux , winning the WCHA championship twice with the team (2010 and 2011) and, apart from his debut season, was on a WCHA All-Star team at the end of each season . In addition, he was named Defensive Player of the Year in the 2008/09 season, while he led the college team as captain in the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons .

Professional area

As a free agent , Genoway signed an entry contract with the Minnesota Wild from the National Hockey League (NHL) in April 2011 . The Wild used it, apart from a single NHL game in April 2012, exclusively on their farm team , the Houston Eros from the American Hockey League (AHL). As a result, Minnesota gave him to the Washington Capitals in March 2013 and received a seven-round vote in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft . In the following almost one and a half years, the defender also failed to establish himself in the NHL, so he was only used in the AHL with the Hershey Bears .

After the 2013/14 season, Genoway decided to move to Europe, where he joined Dinamo Riga from the Continental Hockey League (KHL). Within the league, he changed teams from year to year, playing for HK Spartak Moscow and the Finnish Jokerit , before he recently signed a contract with HK Lada Tolyatti in June 2017 . He also represented the Jokerit and Tolyatti in the KHL All-Star Game .

From May 2018 Genoway was under contract with Frölunda HC in the Svenska Hockeyligan and won the Champions Hockey League and the Swedish championship with this in the 2018/19 season . In addition, he was the best on points and the most dangerous goal scorer in the Champions Hockey League season. After these successes, he left the club in Sweden and returned to the KHL when he signed a contract with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in May 2019 . A year later, the defender moved to league rivals Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg .

International

Genoway gained his first experience with Team Canada during the 2016/17 season when he represented his home country at the Germany Cup and the Spengler Cup . The defender won the Spengler Cup with the Canadian selection, while the Germany Cup won a silver medal. In January 2018 it was announced that he would be part of the Canadian squad at the 2018 Winter Olympics . He benefited from the decision of the NHL not to interrupt the season for this Olympiad and thus ban their players from participating. In Pyeongchang, the defender and the team finally won the bronze medal.
