Jakub Kovář (born July 19, 1988 in Písek , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with Awtomobilist Yekaterinburg in the Continental Hockey League since May 2017 . His brother Jan is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Jakub Kovář began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of the IHC Písek . From there, the goalkeeper moved in 2005 to the U20 juniors of HC České Budějovice , for whom he was active in the following two years. During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 in the fourth round as a total of 109th player by the Philadelphia Flyers , for which he however never played. Instead, he ran in the 2007/08 season for the Oshawa Generals and Windsor Spitfires in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League .
For the 2008/09 season he returned to České Budějovice and completed a total of 23 games in the Extraliga and only prevented relegation with his team, which had been top of the main round in the previous year, relegation. At European level, he was in a game of the Champions Hockey League between the posts. He also played three games on loan for SK Horácká Slavia Třebíč in the first division , the second Czech division.
The 2009/10 season Kovář spent alternately at HC České Budějovice in the Extraliga and as a loan player at the second division HC Tábor . In the 2010/11 season , the national player became a regular goalkeeper at HC Mountfield, for whom he was on the ice in a total of 58 games. He was particularly convincing in the play-offs, when he conceded an average of 1.79 goals per game in six games and achieved a catch rate of 94.7 percent.
In January 2013 he extended his contract for two years, but made use of an exit clause in May of the same year and moved to Awtomobilist Yekaterinburg in the Continental Hockey League for two years .
International
For the Czech Republic , Kovář took part in the junior division of the U18 World Junior Championship in 2006 , where he won the bronze medal with his team, and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2007 and 2008 . In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad for the first time in 2011 at the Euro Hockey Tour . He also represented the Czech Republic at the 2011 World Cup , where he and his team won the bronze medal as a substitute goalkeeper without a commitment.
