The defensive striker collected 95 points in 118 games in the two seasons with the Storm. The highlight of this time was winning the J. Ross Robertson Cup at the end of the 1997/98 season, as well as being awarded the Bobby Smith Trophy . In the subsequent Memorial Cup , the team only lost in the final against the Portland Winter Hawks . Nevertheless, Malhotra was awarded the George Parsons Trophy as the fairest player in sport and was voted into the All-Star team. In the summer, then chose him New York Rangers in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft from the first round as seventh overall player.
After the training camp of the Rangers in September 1998, the striker managed immediately secured a place in the main squad of NHL - franchises to obtain. In 73 missions in the 1998/99 season , he came to 16 points scorer. The following game year was less successful. Although he played 27 games for the Rangers in the NHL, he was also used again in the Guelph Storm in the OHL and the Hartford Wolf Pack in the American Hockey League . With the Rangers farm team , he won the Calder Cup at the end of the season . The 2000/01 season spent Malhotra both the Rangers and the Wolf Pack because the management of the Rangers to their former first-round picks did not show satisfied with the development. After he had then completely spent the 2001/02 season in New York, he was given on March 12, 2002 together with Barrett Heisten in exchange for Martin Ručínský and Roman Ljaschenko to the Dallas Stars . For the Texans, the center only ran for a year and a half, as it was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets from the waiver list on November 21, 2003 , after the stars no longer found a use for it. In Columbus, Malhotra played the 2003/04 season to an end. With 25 points from 65 encounters, he played his best NHL season to date.
Due to the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , the Canadian spent the season in Europe. At the beginning of the 2005/06 season , Malhotra returned to the Columbus Blue Jackets in the NHL. At the end of the season he was again able to set a personal record with 31 points. The following three seasons were also extremely successful for the striker, as he was always able to score around 25 to 30 points. The 2008/09 season he set another personal record with 35 points and thus had a significant share in reaching the playoffs for the first time in the history of the Blue Jackets franchise. Nevertheless, his expiring contract was not extended during the summer break, whereupon the San Jose Sharks invited him to the training camp in September 2009. On September 23, they finally signed him for a year.
After three years, he left Vancouver in the summer of 2013, becoming a free agent . After he couldn't find a new team right away, he joined the Charlotte Checkers with a try-out contract before the Carolina Hurricanes signed him for a year as a cooperation partner of the Checkers. The Hurricanes did not extend it, so that Malhotra joined the Canadiens de Montréal in August 2014 . He also stayed there for a year, so from May 2015 he was looking for a new employer as a free agent . In December 2015, he finally found a new team in the Lake Erie Monsters from the American Hockey League, which he remained loyal to until his release in March 2016. He then ended his active career and moved to the Vancouver Canucks coaching staff in September 2016 . The Canucks promoted him to assistant coach for the new head coach Travis Green in June 2017 .
