Tanner Pearson (born August 10, 1992 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League since February 2019 . The left winger previously spent six years with the Los Angeles Kings , who selected him in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in 30th position and won the Stanley Cup with him in 2014 , as well as a season with the Pittsburgh Penguins .

Career

Tanner Pearson was born in Kitchener, where his father worked for Bauer Hockey , the leading manufacturer of ice hockey equipment. Through him he came into contact with the sport at an early age, so he and his father took part in training for NHL franchises several times . He began playing organized ice hockey at the age of four in his hometown of Kitchener. As a result, he went through the youth departments of the Kitchener Rangers and the Kitchener Dutchmen until he was in the Priority Selection 2008 of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 266th position of the Barrie Colts . This very late election, which was also due to a broken wrist he sustained in the spring of 2008, meant that the Colts did not accept him into the roster for the time being. Rather, Pearson spent the following seasons 2008/09 and 2009/10 with the Waterloo Siskins in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League , a third-rate junior league. In his second year in Waterloo, he impressed with 70 points from 51 games, and as a result was accepted into the Barrie Colts squad at the beginning of the 2010/11 season and thus played in the OHL, one of Canada's three top junior leagues .

At the Barrie Colts, Pearson made his breakthrough in the second season, in which he scored 91 points in 60 games. He also took part in the U20 World Cup with the Canadian U20 national team and won the bronze medal there with the team. The winger could not participate in the OHL play-offs because he broke his fibula in the last game of the regular season . Despite it followed the 2012 NHL Entry Draft , which was the last in which Pearson could be drafted - his two years "delay", caused by the late start at the Barrie Colts, continued in the NHL Entry Draft. Since his opponents in the OHL were usually much younger than him, many scouts were cautious in their assessment. The Central Scouting Services still listed him on position 29 of the North American outfield players, so that in the end, despite his rating as a "late bloomer" in the first round, he was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in 30th place.

Pearson exceeded the age limit of the OHL, so that the Los Angeles Kings provided him with an entry-level contract in August 2012 and gave it to the Manchester Monarchs , their farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL). With the Monarchs, the Canadian spent the entire regular season and scored 47 points scorer in 64 games. After leaving the Calder Cup playoffs with the Monarchs, the Kings called him for the first time in the NHL squad, so Pearson made his debut in the National Hockey League in the Conference semifinals against the San Jose Sharks . He did not go on further missions; the Kings failed in the next play-off round to the Chicago Blackhawks .

He spent the 2013/14 season in regular alternation in the AHL and NHL, making 41 appearances for the Monarchs and 25 games for the Kings. During the play-offs, however, Pearson was firmly in the NHL line-up and with 12 points from 24 games contributed to the fact that the Kings won the Stanley Cup . After being named NHL Rookie of the Month in October 2014 , Pearson broke his left leg in a league game in January 2015 and was out for the remainder of the season. By then he was the Kings second-best goalscorer with 12 goals from 42 games and was nominated as a rookie for the Skills Competition of the NHL All-Star Game 2015 . His place was subsequently taken over by Jiří Sekáč .

In May 2017, Pearson signed a new four-year contract in Los Angeles that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 3.75 million. In November 2018, however, it was given to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Carl Hagelin . There he only spent three months before moving to the Vancouver Canucks in February of the following year in exchange for Erik Gudbranson .
