Jiří Sekáč (born June 10, 1992 in Kladno , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with HK Awangard Omsk from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) since July 2020 and plays there in the position of the center .
Career
Jiří Sekáč began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of HC Kladno , where he was active until 2009. Subsequently, the center joined the Peterborough Petes from the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League (OHL), but left the team after eight games without a point and penalty to play for the Youngstown Phantoms in the Junior League United States Hockey League in the following two years (USHL) to accrue.
For the 2011/12 season , Sekáč was obliged by HC Lev Poprad from the Continental Hockey League (KHL). In the 2-4 home defeat against HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk on September 12, 2011, he was for the first time in the squad of HC Lev Poprad in the KHL. In July of the following year he received a contract extension with HC Lev, which had meanwhile moved to Prague. From November 2012 he joined the partner team HC Sparta Prague in the Extraliga before he established himself as a regular player in the 2013/14 season and reached the play-off final for the Gagarin Cup with HC Lev . He was then nominated for the 2014 World Cup .
His achievements in the KHL and at the World Championship drew the interest of some NHL franchises to Sekáč, who ultimately signed a two-year contract with the Canadiens de Montréal . There he played until February 2015, before the Canadiens gave him over to the Anaheim Ducks and Devante Smith-Pelly received in return . The Czech also stayed in Anaheim for less than a year until he was given to the Chicago Blackhawks in January 2016 in exchange for Ryan Garbutt . When the Blackhawks wanted to send him to the American Hockey League (AHL) via the waiver a month later , he was instead signed by the Arizona Coyotes .
Following the 2015/16 season, he returned to the Continental Hockey League when he signed a one-year contract with Ak Bars Kazan in June 2016 . There the Czech was on the ice for three years and won the Gagarin Cup with the team in 2018 , before he was transferred to HK CSKA Moscow in May 2019 . After a season there in which he had collected 25 scorer points in 45 season games, he joined league rivals HK Awangard Omsk in July 2020 .
