Career
Ryan Garbutt began his career as a hockey player in his hometown with the youth team Winnipeg South Blues, for which he was active from 2003 to 2005 in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He then attended Brown University for four years , for whose ice hockey team he also played in ECAC hockey . The center spent the 2009/10 season with the Corpus Christi IceRays from the Central Hockey League . For this he scored 50 scorer points in his first season in professional ice hockey in a total of 65 games, including 22 goals. He started the 2010/11 season with the Gwinnett Gladiators in the ECHL , but was able to quickly draw attention to himself there with 17 scorer points in ten games, after which he spent the rest of the season with the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League .
On July 1, 2011 Garbutt received a contract as a free agent with the Dallas Stars . For this he came in the 2011/12 season in the National Hockey League to two goals and an assist in 20 games. Most of the season, however, he spent with Dallas' farm team Texas Stars in the American Hockey League. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season , which was shortened due to a lockout , he was initially only part of the Dallas Stars' NHL squad.
In July 2015, the stars including Trevor Daley gave it to the Chicago Blackhawks and received Patrick Sharp and Stephen Johns in return . Garbutt stayed in Chicago for almost half a season before moving to the Anaheim Ducks in January 2016 in exchange for Jiří Sekáč .
In May 2017 Garbutt left North America for the first time and signed a one-year contract with HK Sochi from the Continental Hockey League (KHL). After 12 KHL games for Sochi, Garbutt moved to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod and another two months later - shortly before the end of the transfer period - to HC Slovan Bratislava .
After the end of the 2017/18 season, Garbutt left the KHL and signed a one-year contract with ERC Ingolstadt in the German Ice Hockey League in August 2018 .
