Career

Jacques Cloutier began his career as a hockey player with the Trois-Rivières , for which he was active from 1976 to 1980 in the Canadian junior league QMJHL . With the Draveurs he won the Coupe du Président in 1978 and 1979 and was also elected to the league's all-star team in these two seasons. During his time in Trois-Rivières, the goalkeeper was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1979 in the third round as a total of 55th player by the Buffalo Sabers . For the Buffalo Sabers he played from 1980 to 1989 in the National Hockey League , as well as for their farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League . With Rochester he won the Calder Cup in the 1982/83 season .

On September 28, 1989 Cloutier was given together with a five-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 1990 in exchange for Steve Ludzik and a six- round vote for the same draft to the Chicago Blackhawks . For the team from Illinois, the Canadian completed a total of 57 games in the NHL in the following year and a half. He was then transferred to the Québec Nordiques in January 1991 in exchange for Tony McKegney . At the Nordiques he ended his career at the age of 34 following the 1993/94 season . Immediately thereafter, he became an assistant coach for Québec's AHL farm team Cornwall Aces . In this position he worked until 1996, after which he worked in the same position with the Colorado Avalanche from the NHL, the successor team to the Québec Nordiques. He worked for the Avalanche, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2000/01 season as a member of the coaching staff , until June 2009. Subsequently, his contract was no longer renewed.

On the occasion of the Heroes of Hockey Game , which took place as part of the NHL All-Star Games , he laced his ice skates again in 2001.

In May 2011, Cloutier was hired by the ZSC Lions as an assistant trainer. For the 2012/13 season he returned to the NHL and subsequently worked for four years as an assistant coach at the Calgary Flames before he was dismissed after the 2015/16 season along with head coach Bob Hartley .

In December 2016 Hartley became national coach in Latvia and again took Cloutier as assistant coach. The duo looked after the Latvian national team at the 2017 and 2018 World Championships. Then Hartley and Cloutier were hired as head and assistant coaches by HK Awangard Omsk from the Continental Hockey League .
