Tyler Toffoli (born April 24, 1992 in Scarborough , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League since February 2020 . The winger previously spent seven years with the Los Angeles Kings , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2014 . With the Canadian national team , he won the gold medal at the 2015 World Cup .
Career
Toffoli began his career with the Toronto Junior Canadiens in the Greater Toronto Hockey League , where he scored 174 points in 83 games in his final season and was ahead of Jeff Skinner and Tyler Seguin in the scorer standings. In 2008, he was selected in seventh overall position in the OHL Priority Selection .
Ontario Hockey League
He then played for the Ottawa 67’s in the Ontario Hockey League and was the team's top rookie in his debut season in 2008/09 . After completing the regular season, he was then elected to the First All-Rookie Team of the league. In the following season he increased his points yield to 79 points and was for the first time among the top 20 scorers of the OHL. He also scored five assists in the OHL All-Star Game . He was then invited to the CHL Top Prospects Game , in which the 40 most hopeful talents compete against each other for the NHL Entry Draft every year . In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft , Toffoli was finally selected in the second round in 47th position by the Los Angeles Kings .
In the 2010/11 season he managed to break the 50 goal and 100 point mark for the first time. Toffoli finished the season with 108 points tied with Jason Akeson as the most successful scorer in the league and received the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy . Since he played in the junior league mainly as a right winger, he also received the Jim Mahon Trophy as the best scorer in this position. He was also the OHL's top scorer with 57 goals. At the end of the season he was then elected to the League's First All-Star Team . After the 67's early elimination from the play-offs, Toffoli made his professional debut for the Kings farm team, the Manchester Monarchs , in the American Hockey League on April 10, 2011 , scoring his first goal. Eight days later he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Los Angeles Kings.
For the 2011/12 season Toffoli returned once more to the Ottawa 67's in the OHL and was again the best right winger in the league with 100 points scorer. Overall, he finished the season two points behind Michael Sgarbossa as the second-best scorer and was again the OHL's top scorer. He was re-elected to the First All-Star Team.
National Hockey League
After four years in the OHL, Toffoli finally moved to the American Hockey League for the 2012/13 season , where he played for the Manchester Monarchs. In his rookie season he then scored 28 goals and 51 points in 58 appearances. He was among the top five rookies in the league for goals and scorer points. He also scored two hat tricks against the Portland Pirates and took part in the 2013 AHL All-Star Classic . At the end of the season, Toffoli was finally elected to the AHL All-Rookie Team and a week later received the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award for Rookie of the Year. In parallel, he made his NHL debut for the Los Angeles Kings during the season and scored five points in ten games. In the play-offs he was finally in the Kings squad and established himself there beyond the season.
In 2014 Toffoli won the Stanley Cup with the Kings and in 2016 the NHL Plus / Minus Award, which is not officially awarded . After seven years in Los Angeles, he was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks in February 2020 . In return, Kings Tim Schaller and Tyler Madden received a second-round vote for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and a conditional four-round vote for the 2022 NHL Entry Draft .
