Career
Shawn Matthias began his career as a hockey player with the Belleville Bulls , for which he played in the Ontario Hockey League for a total of four years from 2004 to 2008 . During this time he was selected in the second round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft as the 47th player overall by the Detroit Red Wings , who took the center on February 27, 2007, along with their second round eligibility for the 2007 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Todd Bertuzzi transferred to the Florida Panthers without having ever played for the Red Wings. After Matthias initially continued to play for Belleville in the OHL, he made his debut in the National Hockey League during the 2007/08 season , where he scored two goals in four games for the Panthers. In the 2008/09 season Matthias is in the Florida squad as well as in their AHL farm team Rochester Americans .
After almost six years in the Panthers franchise, they transferred him to the Vancouver Canucks together with Jacob Markström on March 4, 2014, one day before the trade deadline . In return, Roberto Luongo moved to Florida. After the 2014/15 season, his contract in Vancouver was not renewed, so he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent in July 2015 . In February 2016, however, he was handed over to the Colorado Avalanche , with the Maple Leafs receiving Colin Smith and a four-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft .
In Colorado, Matthias ended the 2015/16 season, but did not receive a new contract, so he joined the Winnipeg Jets as a free agent in July 2016 . There, his expiring contract was not extended after the 2017/18 season.
