Thomas "Tom" Renney (born March 1, 1955 in Cranbrook , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey coach who was an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings until the summer of 2014 . In the NHL he was already active as head coach with the Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers .

Career

Tom Renney began his coaching career in 1990 when he succeeded Ken Hitchcock with the Kamloops Blazers in the Canadian Junior League WHL . In his second year, he led the team to win the President's Cup and also won the Memorial Cup . After two years with the juniors, Renney joined the Canadian ice hockey association Hockey Canada and was coach of the Canadian national team , with which he won the silver medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics .

He received his first post in the NHL in 1996 when he was appointed coach of the Vancouver Canucks . However, his tenure was mostly a failure. The 1996/97 season ended the Canucks outside the playoff ranks and after 19 games the following season, the team had only been able to win four games, so Renney was dismissed.

In 2000 he joined the organization of the New York Rangers , where he oversaw and delegated the work of the amateur scouts as Director of Player Personnel and assisted the Pro Scouts. In 2002, Renney was promoted to Vice President of Player Development, which allowed him to focus even more on developing talent within the organization. For the 2003/04 season he took over the position of assistant coach behind Glen Sather , who was also acting as general manager at the time. Sather resigned from the coaching position in the course of the season to concentrate on his management duties and Renney became the new head coach of the Rangers.

After losing the 2004/05 season because of the lockout, Renney was able to go into his first full season as a Rangers coach in 2005/06 . With experienced players such as Jaromír Jágr , Martin Straka and Michael Nylander as well as talented young players such as Henrik Lundqvist , the Rangers made their first playoff participation in over nine years. In the following two years they reached the second round of the playoffs. On February 23, 2009 Renney was released from his position as head coach after a series of defeats. By then he had become one of the most successful trainers in franchise history. From 2012 to 2014 Renney was active as an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings .

Renney was also active internationally as an assistant coach for the Canadian national team, including winning the world championship in 2005 .
