The antennae have a matt black club that consists of three sections. The upper wings ( elytres ) each have three longitudinal ribs and a clear transverse groove on the last two thirds between the first and second rib. The spaces between the longitudinal grooves are regularly structured with fine points and also have flat, shiny transverse elevations and large wrinkles, which distinguishes them from the Ribbed Friend of the Dead ( Thanatophilus sinuatus ), whose spaces only have the fine points.
