Career
youth
Andreas Athanasiou, who has Greek roots, was born in London and grew up in Woodbridge , Ontario. In his youth, the attacker played for the Toronto Titans , among others , until he was selected in the Priority Selection 2010 of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 81st position by the London Knights . Thus Athanasiou was active in the OHL from the beginning of the 2010/11 season, where he scored eleven goals and assists in his rookie season and took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 over the turn of the year , where he and the team Canada Ontario won the gold medal. He was also elected to the Second All-Rookie Team of the OHL and took part in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 in August 2011 , where he also won the gold medal with the team. In 2012 Athanasiou took part in the CHL Top Prospects Game and won the OHL championship, the J. Ross Robertson Cup , with the Knights . This was synonymous with participation in the 2012 Memorial Cup , in which the team failed in the final due to the hosts from Shawinigan .
After the season, the attacker was selected in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in 110th position by the Detroit Red Wings . In the following off-season , the London Knights gave him to the Barrie Colts and received three voting rights for the OHL Priority Selection in return . In the following season, the attacker with the Colts again reached the final of the J. Ross Robertson Cup, but lost to his old team, the London Knights. In his fourth and final year at the OHL, Athanasiou got 95 points in 66 games, making him the best scorer of his team and fifth on the OHL scorer list .
Detroit Red Wings
After the end of the 2013/14 OHL season, Athanasiou moved to the Detroit Red Wings organization, which had already provided him with an entry-level contract in November 2013 . As expected , the Red Wings sent him to their farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins , in the American Hockey League (AHL), where the attacker completed his first eight professional appearances by the end of the season. After he had spent the entire 2014/15 season in the AHL, he was appointed to the Red Wings squad for the first time in November 2015 and subsequently made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL). Subsequently, the attacker was mainly used with the Red Wings and ended the season with 37 NHL and 26 AHL games.
After the end of the 2016/17 season, Athanasiou could not agree on a new contract with the Red Wings for the time being, so he was considered a restricted free agent and rumors about an imminent move to Europe or the Continental Hockey League were loud. Ultimately, however, both parties agreed on a new one-year contract in October 2017, which was then extended for another two seasons.
Edmonton Oilers
After six years in the organization of the Red Wings, Athanasiou was handed over to the Edmonton Oilers with Ryan Kuffner at the trade deadline in February 2020 . In return, Detroit received Sam Gagner and a second-round vote for the 2020 and 2021 NHL Entry Drafts .
