Darnell Nurse (born February 4, 1995 in Hamilton , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League since July 2013 and plays for them on the position of defender .
Career
In the junior division, Darnell Nurse played for the St. Michael's Buzzers and the Don Mills Flyers, among others. Nurse was named by Sault Ste. At the OHL Priority Selection 2011 . Marie Greyhounds selected in third place overall. In his first OHL season, Nurse appeared in 53 games for Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. He also represented Canada (Ontario) at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2012 and played for the Canadian U18 team at the U18 Junior Ice Hockey World Championship in 2012 . At the World U-17 Hockey Challenge, he scored one goal in five games and prepared two more. For the Canadian U18 national team, he played in seven games, in which he did not score any points, but still achieved a plus-4 balance. Nurse was instrumental in making the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds reached the playoffs. As assistant captain, he was the only player who ran up in all 68 games of the regular season , in which he scored 12 goals and 29 assists and ended the season with a plus 15 balance and a total of 115 penalty minutes. In six playoff games he scored one goal and three assists. He also took part in the 2013 U18 Junior Ice Hockey World Championship for Canada.
After the Oilers selected him in seventh position in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft , they signed him directly in July 2013. For the time being, Nurse remained in the OHL and only joined the Oklahoma City Barons , the then farm team of the Oilers from the American Hockey League , in April 2014 . He was unable to establish himself there and also spent the 2014/15 season with the greyhounds in the OHL. At the turn of the year 2014/15 he took part in the World Cup in his own country with the U20 national team and won the gold medal there with the team.
Since the beginning of the 2015/16 season, the defender has been a regular player for the Oilers in the NHL. Nurse made his debut for the senior national team at the 2018 World Cup , where he finished fourth with the team. A year later he won the silver medal with the team.
In September 2018, Nurse signed a new two-year contract with a total volume of 6.4 million US dollars, which was prematurely extended for a further two years in February 2020 and, starting with the 2020/21 season, earned him an average annual salary of 5.6 million US dollars. Darnell Nurse is the son of former CFL - Wide Receiver Richard Nurse . He is also the nephew of the former NFL star quarterback Donovan McNabb and the brother of the Canadian national basketball player Kia Nurse .
