Ian Douglas Cole (born February 21, 1989 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Colorado Avalanche from the National Hockey League since July 2018 . The defender previously played for the St. Louis Blues , Pittsburgh Penguins and Columbus Blue Jackets , winning the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017 .

Career

Ian Cole began his career as a hockey player in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program , for which he was active from 2005 to 2007 in the junior division of the North American Hockey League . He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in the first round as the 18th player of the St. Louis Blues . First, however, he attended the University of Notre Dame for three years , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association . With his team he won the CCHA championship in 2009. He himself was elected to the first All-Star Team of the CCHA and to the first All-American Team of the West Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .

Towards the end of the 2009-10 season , Cole made his professional ice hockey debut for St. Louis' farm team Peoria Rivermen when he scored one goal and four assists in nine games in the American Hockey League . In the 2010/11 season , the American ran for the first time for the St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League . In his rookie year , he scored one goal and three assists in 26 games. At the same time, he continued to run for Peoria in the AHL. In the following season he was also for St. Louis in the NHL and Peoria in the AHL on the ice.

In March 2015 - Cole had now established himself in the NHL lineup - the Blues gave him to the Pittsburgh Penguins and in return received Robert Bortuzzo and a seven-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . In the following 2015/16 season, the defender won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins and repeated this success the following year. After almost three years in the service of the Penguins, Cole was handed over to the Ottawa Senators in February 2018 together with Filip Gustavsson as well as a first-round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and a third-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . In return, Ottawa received Derick Brassard , Vincent Dunn and a third-round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. The Vegas Golden Knights , who were also involved in the transfer , also gave Tobias Lindberg to the Penguins and took over 40 percent of Brassard's salary. In return, they received Ryan Reaves and a four-round election in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

Just two days later and without running for the Senators, Cole was already transferred to the Columbus Blue Jackets , who sent Nick Moutrey and a third-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft to Ottawa. With the Blue Jackets, he ended the season, but received no further contract, so he joined the Colorado Avalanche as a free agent in July 2018 and signed a three-year contract there.

International

For the USA , Cole took part in the U18 World Junior Championships in 2007 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 2008 and 2009 . At the U18 World Cup in 2007 he won the silver medal with his team.
