Samuel Girard (born May 12, 1998 in Roberval , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Colorado Avalanche from the National Hockey League since November 2017 .

Career

Samuel Girard was born in Roberval and played in his youth for the Lac-St-Jean Espoirs and the Jonquière Élites, among others . In the entry draft of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ), the highest junior league in Québec, he was selected in 2014 in third position by the Cataractes de Shawinigan and ran for the team at the beginning of the 2014/15 season. In his debut season, Girard had 43 points scorer in 64 games, was awarded the Trophée Raymond Lagacé as the best rookie among defenders and was also elected to the LHJMQ All-Rookie Team . He also represented his home country on an international level for the first time this season when he took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2014 in November and finished seventh with the Canada Black team . A little later, he won the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2015 .

In his second LHJMQ year, the defender increased his personal statistics significantly to 74 points, before another 22 points were added in the playoffs and Girard thus played a major role in the fact that the team only won the Huskies de Rouyn-Noranda in the final for the Coupe du Président was subject. The Canadian was then awarded the Émile Bouchard Trophy as the best defender in the league and voted into the LHJMQ First All-Star Team . At the same time, his exemplary sporting style of play was honored with the Frank J. Selke trophy and the CHL Sportsman of the Year award from the entire Canadian Hockey League . After Girard had already participated in the CHL Top Prospects Game during the season , the Nashville Predators selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 2016 in 47th position and provided him with an entry-level contract in September of the same year .

Nevertheless, Girard initially returned to Shawinigan for another season, in which he led the league in assists (66) and - as in the previous year - the defenders in points (75). After the LHJMQ season ended, the defender joined the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League , the Predators' farm team , and made his professional debut there with eight appearances. As part of the subsequent preparation for the season, Girard earned a place in the Predators squad and subsequently made his debut in the National Hockey League in October 2017 , recording three scorer points in his first two games. After only five appearances for the Predators, however, the Canadian was handed over to the Colorado Avalanche in November 2017 as part of a larger swap deal together with Wladislaw Kamenew and a second-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . In return, Nashville received Kyle Turris from the Ottawa Senators , who in turn sent Andrew Hammond , Shane Bowers and a first-round vote in the 2018 draft and a third-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft to Colorado, ultimately engaging Matt Duchene .

As a result, Girard established himself in the NHL Avalanche squad and signed a new seven-year contract in Colorado in July 2019, which should bring him an average annual salary of five million US dollars from the beginning of the 2020/21 season.
