Matthew "Matt" Calvert (born December 24, 1989 in Brandon , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League since July 2018 . Previously, he spent eight years with the Columbus Blue Jackets .
Career
Matt Calvert began his career as a hockey player in his hometown with the Brandon Wheat Kings , for whom he was active from 2007 to 2010 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League . In the 2009/10 season he was elected to the second All-Star Team of the Eastern Conference of the WHL. In addition, he was awarded the election to the All-Star Team of the final tournament for the Memorial Cup , which was hosted by the Brandon Wheat Kings. During his junior years, the winger was selected in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round as a total of 127th player from the Columbus Blue Jackets . For the Blue Jackets, he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 2010/11 season , scoring 20 points in 42 games, including eleven goals. At the same time he played 38 games for Columbus' farm team Springfield Falcons in the American Hockey League , where he scored 25 points, including 13 goals. After two more seasons, alternating between AHL and NHL, Calvert established himself in the Blue Jackets line-up at the beginning of the 2013/14 season.
After eight years in Columbus, Calvert did not receive a new contract from the Blue Jackets at the end of the 2017/18 season, so he joined the Colorado Avalanche as a free agent in July 2018 .
