Mark Barberio (born March 23, 1990 in Montreal , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League since February 2017 and plays for them in the position of defender .
Career
youth
Mark Barberio was born in Montreal; his grandparents emigrated from Italy to the United States. He started playing ice hockey at the age of five and subsequently attended the Lakeshore Hockey School in Kirkland . In 2006 he was selected by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in 12th position in the entry draft of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ) . The Screaming Eagles gave it to the Moncton Wildcats after about half a season, including a first-round vote for the 2007 draft , and received Luc Bourdon in return .
Despite moving to Moncton, Barberio was elected to the LHJMQ All-Rookie Team at the end of his debut season . In the second season he increased his personal statistics to 46 scorer points from 70 games and was selected at the end of the season in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in 152nd position by the Tampa Bay Lightning . With the beginning of the following season, the defender led the Wildcats as assistant captain. In his final year in the LHJMQ, he won the Coupe du Président with the team and was elected to the LHJMQ Second All-Star Team . He then signed a three-year entry contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in May 2008 .
Norfolk and Syracuse
The Lightning initially gave Barberio to the Norfolk Admirals , their farm team from the American Hockey League , to give him game practice. He finished his first season in professional ice hockey with 31 points from 68 games. The breakthrough came in the following 2011/12 season. With the team he won the Calder Cup and received a number of personal awards, including the Eddie Shore Award for best defender, was appointed to the AHL First All-Star Team and took part in the AHL All-Star Game . Statistically, he scored 13 goals and 48 assists in 74 games of the regular season, making him the best defender in the assists and scorer points categories.
With the 2012/13 season, the Tampa Bay Lightning farm team changed, so that Barberio ran for the Syracuse Crunch from now on . Here, too, he reached the final of the Calder Cup with the team, but failed there because of the Grand Rapids Griffins . Nevertheless, he led all defenders of the play-offs in goals, assists and scorer points. He also took part in the AHL All-Star Game again and was appointed to the AHL Second All-Star Team .
Tampa Bay Lightning
At the end of the 2012/13 season, the Lightning first called him into the squad, so that he made his debut in the National Hockey League in April 2013 . After his contract was extended by one year in the summer of 2013, he established himself in the NHL squad the following season and made 49 appearances. He scored his first two NHL goals directly against the Canadiens de Montréal in January 2014 ; in the history of the franchise, only Steven Stamkos had achieved this.
In the summer of 2014, his contract was renewed for a year. The following season he reached the Stanley Cup final with the team , but lost 4-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks . After the season, his expiring contract was not extended.
Canadiens de Montréal and Colorado Avalanche
As a free agent , he joined the Canadiens de Montréal in July 2015 , but they sent him to the AHL as part of the preparation for the season for the St. John's IceCaps . Barberio spent the next one and a half seasons alternating between the AHL and the NHL until he was signed off waiver by the Colorado Avalanche in February 2017 when he was about to be sent to the AHL again.
