Joseph Luc Bourdon (born February 16, 1987 in Shippagan , New Brunswick , † May 29, 2008 in Lamèque , New Brunswick) was a Canadian ice hockey player . During his career between 2006 and 2008, he played 36 games for the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League and 52 games for their farm team , the Manitoba Moose , in the American Hockey League .

Career

Bourdon, who struggled with arthritis in his childhood , first played at the age of 15 for the Miramichi Rae's Yamaha Rivermen in the New Brunswick Midget Hockey League . In the summer of 2003, the Foreurs de Val-d'Or selected him in third overall position in the draft of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . Right at the beginning of the 2003/04 season, the defender was in the Foreurs squad and played 64 games in which he scored eight points. In the following season he quadrupled his point yield. His performance on the offensive and defensive eventually led to the fact that he was selected in the first round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft as the tenth player by the Vancouver Canucks . Bourdon also attended the Canucks training camp the following fall, but was sent back to the QMJHL for further development. There the Canadian started the season again in Val-d'Or and contributed 20 points in the first 20 games. On January 4, 2006, however, he was transferred to league rivals Moncton Wildcats , who hosted the Memorial Cup that year . However, Bourdon sustained a serious injury shortly after the move. He broke his fibula and also suffered several sprains and torn ligaments. Only for the playoffs he reported fit again and won the Coupe du Président with the Wildcats .

The 2006/07 season finally began Bourdon after good performance in training camp with the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League . They had offered him a three-year contract in May 2006. After nine games at the start of the season, however, he was sent back to Moncton before they transferred him to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on January 8, 2007 . The defender ended his final QMJHL season there and joined the Manitoba Moose in the American Hockey League playoffs . These were the Canucks farm team . After the defender missed a place in the Vancouver squad in autumn 2007, he started the 2007/08 season with the Moose. In November he played for the Canucks in the NHL. On November 16, he scored his first NHL goal in a 6-2 win over the Minnesota Wild in a majority game. He was sent back to the Manitoba Moose in the meantime, but at the end of January the defender made the renewed leap into the NHL and fought for a regular place with the Canucks by the end of the season.

On May 29, 2008, Bourdon died in a motorcycle accident near his hometown.

International

Bourdon represented his home country a total of three times in international tournaments. For the first time he played at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2005 , where he won the silver medal with the team. He was also named the tournament's best defender. The following year he won the gold medal at the U20 Junior World Championships and was also nominated for the tournament's All-Star Team. The Canadians repeated the medal win with Bourdon the following year .
