Pavel Francouz (born June 3, 1990 in Pilsen ) is a Czech ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League since May 2018 .

Career

Pavel Francouz was born in Pilsen and went through the youth department of HC Plzeň in his hometown in his youth . In the 2008/09 season, as an 18-year-old, he recorded his first 15 games in the Extraliga , the top division of the Czech Republic. At the same time he was on loan for HC Klatovy in the 2nd division and for HC Tábor and SK Horácká Slavia Třebíč in the 1st division . In 2010 he moved permanently to HC Slovan Ústečtí Lvi , with whom he won the championship title of the 1st league, but missed promotion to the extra league. The Czech only returned there at the beginning of the 2012/13 season when he was signed by HC Litvínov . There he developed into the undisputed regular goalkeeper and led the team to the Czech championship title in 2015 . In the playoffs he recorded four shutouts and a catch rate of 95.3%, so that he was named the most valuable player .

These achievements made Francouz desirable outside of his Czech homeland, so that he moved to the Continental Hockey League (KHL) at HK Traktor Chelyabinsk for the 2015/16 season. There he confirmed the statistical performance of previous years and was thus honored as the best goalkeeper in the league at the end of the 2017/18 season and also elected to the KHL All-Star Team. In the previous year he had already represented his team at the KHL All-Star Game . In May 2018, the goalkeeper finally signed an entry contract with the Colorado Avalanche from the National Hockey League (NHL). He was unable to earn a regular place there against Semjon Varlamow and Philipp Grubauer for the time being, so that - apart from two NHL appearances - he was mostly on the ice for the Avalanche farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Colorado Eagles . Since Varlamow left Colorado in the summer of 2019, it is assumed that Francouz will be a permanent backup for Grubauer in the Avalanche squad with the start of the 2019/20 season.

Francouz played his first major international tournament with the U18 World Cup in Division I in 2008 , where he promptly returned to the top division with the Czech selection. He then stood on the ice for the U20 national team in his home country at the U20 World Cup in 2010 before making his debut with the senior national team at the 2013 World Cup . In the following years he was regularly represented in the Czech squad at the World Championships in 2014 , 2016 , 2017 , 2018 and 2019 , but so far missed a medal rank with the team. In addition, Francouz represented his home country at the 2018 Winter Olympics , where he led the team as a regular goalkeeper to the semifinals, but failed there because of the Olympic athletes from Russia and finally finished fourth.
