Jesper Fast (formerly: Jesper Fasth ; born December 2, 1991 in Nässjö ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League since May 2012 . Previously, he spent most of his career at HV71 in the domestic Elitserien .

Career

HV71

Jesper Fast started playing ice hockey at Nässjö HC in his hometown . At the beginning of the 2007/08 season he moved to the youth department of HV71 from Jönköping, only 40 kilometers away . There he initially played for the U18s, but in his first season he made three appearances for the U20s in the J20 SuperElit . Fast spent the following season 2008/09, although still eligible to play for the U18, almost exclusively with the U20 and was runner-up with the team at the end of the season. He achieved a significant increase in performance the next year when he increased his points in 37 league games from 14 to 49. He drew attention at home and abroad, so that on the one hand he made his debut for HV71 in Sweden's top division, the Elitserien , and on the other hand was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2010 in 157th position by the New York Rangers .

With the beginning of the 2010/11 season, he made a permanent place in the professional team, for which he scored 16 points in 36 games. In addition, he took part with the Swedish U20 national team at the 2011 U20 World Youth Championship in the United States, where he achieved fourth place. A year before and a year after, he also represented Sweden on the Euro Hockey Tour .

New York Rangers

After another year in Sweden, Fast signed a three-year entry contract with the Rangers in May 2012 . However, they left him with HV71 for the regular season 2012/13, after which he was honored with the Rinkens Riddare for exemplary behavior and sporting spirit. As a result, he came to North America only in the spring of 2013 and completed a competitive game for the Rangers farm team , the Connecticut Whale , in the American Hockey League .

At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Fast was in the NHL squad of the New York Rangers and completed eight competitive games before they gave him to the new farm team Hartford Wolf Pack . In Hartford, Fast got 34 points from 48 games, so that at the end of the season he was called back to the Rangers squad, had three appearances in the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2014 and posted his first scorer point there. As a result, he established himself as a regular scorer in the Rangers' NHL line-up and signed a new two-year contract in New York in the summer of 2015, which was followed by a three-season contract in July 2017.

Surname

Jesper Fast's surname is actually “Fasth”, but his passport has always said “Fast”, whereupon he officially accepted the latter in 2012. This name change also gave him his nickname "Quickie", as fast and quick are synonymous in English and mean "fast".
