The Capital One Arena is a multifunctional arena located in the US capital Washington, DC . The current namesake is the financial services provider Capital One , previously the hall was known as the Verizon Center (until 2017) and as the MCI Center (until 2006).

The arena is home to the Washington Capitals ice hockey team of the National Hockey League (NHL), the Washington Wizards basketball team of the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the Washington Mystics women's basketball team of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Then there is the college basketball team of Georgetown Hoyas of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

In 1995 construction began on a new indoor arena in downtown Washington, to be the new home of the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards, which previously had their home games at the US Airways arena in Washington for lack of an arena in the District of Columbia surrounding state of Maryland .

The 260 million US dollars expensive arena was completed in 1997 and the naming rights to the telecommunications company MCI Inc. sold. Over the years numerous concerts and wrestling events of the WCW and WWE have taken place there. In 2001 the NBA All-Star Game was also played at the MCI Center. On June 11, 2005, Mike Tyson played his last professional boxing match. He lost the fight against Irish Kevin McBride by TKO in the sixth round. In early 2006, Verizon acquired MCI . On March 5th of that year the name of the stadium was changed to Verizon Center .

Since opening, the Verizon Center has been modernized and renovated several times. The most obvious change was the installation of a new video cube in 2008. This replaced the old model and since then has offered the most modern LED displays on all sides. Likewise the cabins of the home teams and were VIP - boxes repeatedly structurally changed and renewed.

On March 13, 2010, the Verizon Center welcomed the 30 millionth visitor to a game of the Wizards .

In August 2017, the naming rights were sold to the financial services provider Capital One , so that the arena is now called Capital One Arena .
