Kevin Martin McBride (born May 5, 1973 in Clones , County Monaghan , Ireland ) is a retired Irish boxer .

Amateur career

Kevin McBride became Irish super heavyweight champion in 1992 and qualified for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona at the European Olympic qualification in Copenhagen . There he was eliminated in the second round against Peter Hrivňák.

Professional career

McBride made his professional debut as a boxer in December 1992, with only one draw. Initially, he boxed mainly in Great Britain and occasionally in the USA, but even for beginners he beat opponents that were difficult to assess with usually few professional fights or a negative match record. The London newspaper "Boxing News" accused him of alcohol problems and lazy training at this time.

In his 20th professional fight on February 7, 1997, he lost to Louis Monaco, standing at this time with four wins and six losses, by technical knockout in the fifth round. Since his balance sheet was impressive in terms of the numbers (and probably also because of its imposing visual appearance), it was still marketable with some reservations. On August 30, 1997 he boxed against Axel Schulz in Berlin and lost by breaking off in round nine. Until then, he had never been in the ring for more than seven rounds in a professional match. Shortly thereafter he was defeated by the British Michael Murray, who had lost his last seven fights, but could knock McBride out.

McBride moved to Brockton , USA , where there is a large Irish community. Under Goody Petronelli, the ex-coach of Marvin Hagler , he improved significantly and was only knocked out against DaVarryl Williamson . But he never beat really good opponents there either.

The culmination"

The high point of his career was the fight against Mike Tyson on June 11, 2005 in Washington, DC In 1995, after Tyson was released from prison, McBride had to face him, but this failed because of McBride's fee. In 2004, McBride's management got the offer to box against Tyson, but again they couldn't agree on the amount of the fee. When the fight was up in April 2005, they finally agreed on a reward of $ 5 million for Tyson and $ 250,000 for McBride. Tyson, who was the favorite despite the knockout loss to Danny Williams in 2004, gave up the fight, leading on points, after the sixth round after McBride had more or less knocked him down at the end of the round (officially no rainfall was recorded because McBride had pushed his opponent to the ground after the blow).

After Tyson

In August 2006 McBride should box against Sjarhej Lyachowitsch for the WBO World Championship. The fight was canceled, however; he should now rise in October against Andrzej Gołota in the ring. Shortly afterwards, however, this meeting was also canceled. Instead, he boxed against Mike Mollo (16-1) on October 7 and was knocked out in the second round after a catastrophic performance. On October 6, 2007 there was still a fight against Gołota; McBride was able to land an impact hit in the first round, but was clearly dominated in the episode. The fight was finally stopped in round six.

On April 9, 2011 McBride fought in the Prudential Center in Newark (New Jersey) against the Pole Tomasz Adamek . McBride could not match Adamek's speed, but was not knocked out due to his high mass and the much lighter opponent. The technically superior Adamek, who used this fight as preparation against Vitali Klitschko , clearly won on points.

On July 29, 2011 McBride fought in Connecticut against the Pole Mariusz Wach for the vacant WBC International title. Awake dominated the fight from the start through technical superiority and speed. McBride was spectacularly knocked out in the fourth round and had to be transported out of the ring on a stretcher. After this defeat, McBride ended his boxing career.
