In the most in long distance runners such as marathon runners applied midfoot running is a kind of compromise between Vorfußlauf and Rückfußlauf , being tried to take the best of both styles of running and minimize the risks of both styles of running.

During the metatarsal run, the entire sole of the foot touches the ground. The foot taps the outside of the heel or the entire outer edge of the foot at a not steep angle and then rolls off.

Compared to the forefoot, the metatarsal is less strenuous on long distances and is easy on the Achilles tendon , the lower impact is advantageous for the joints compared to the hindfoot . When using the metatarsal gait, the disadvantages of both other running methods become effective and the stress on the outer edge of the foot is increased.

One difficulty in metatarsal walking is properly performing and reproducing a clean attachment with the whole foot.
